ARE YOUR MINDS CLOSED?

“Are your minds closed? Are you still without perception?” Jesus reprimands the disciples for being caught up in the worry of the lack of food. Jesus speaks, but they do not understand. He teaches the truth of God, but they are deaf. They have eyes and do not see, minds but do not understand, ears but they do not listen. They are in contact with the Lord every day. They receive from him every light of truth. They are taught, instructed, formed by him.

Visibly, operationally, with signs and wonders, Jesus reveals the newness to which they are called. Yet their hearts are still hardened. Jesus warns them not to withdraw into their own vision, thus closing them to the light of God’s will and ways. We must correct this squint that we often have – one eye being so taken by Jesus and his life, and the other chasing our little problems. Instead, it is necessary to fix both eyes on Jesus, to have our ears tuned to him, our hearts open to him to treasure and ponder his actions, so as to then incarnate him in everyday life.

Contemplating him, the Living Word of the Father, we will avoid the error of closing ourselves on our worries or, worse, of judging his actions based on our vision, and we will learn to have his eyes to contemplate, as from above, the divine ‘embroidery’ – the intricate plan that the Father has woven for us and for our brothers and sisters, with the threads of love.

Let us then open ourselves to his word, especially where he commands us to love others instead of ourselves. This outward focus of our life, powered by faith, sustained by hope and operated in love, is the best way to turn away our thoughts from ourselves, our needs, our plans and desires, and to cultivate instead “eyes that perceive, ears that listen, minds that comprehend and hearts that beat” for him and him alone.

Response: Blessed the man whom you discipline, O Lord.
