SURE FOUNDATION ON THE ROCK JESUS
Man’s life on earth is a time of trial, a constant warfare. And his worth is proved by the way in which he faces the trials of life, either with joy or sorrow. For life to be a joyful challenge, there has to be something or someone to cling to, or it will turn into a total mess, affected by emotions and passions. There is a need to have a strong conviction, a solid foundation, on which one’s life depends and sustains.
Both the readings today speak about structures – “strong city”, “wall”, “rampart”, “house built on rock” – which give shelter and security to people. Prophet Isaiah says, “Trust in the Lord forever, for in the Lord God you have an everlasting rock.” What can be a more strong and secure foundation in our life, if not Jesus Christ, who is the everlasting rock?
The parable of the house built on a rock in the gospel can be interpreted to refer to the soul; it is nurtured and strengthened through labour with the materials of prayer and virtue. Those who are wise and labour, not for the body but for the soul by putting the teachings of the Lord into practice, are always prepared even for severe trials. On the other hand, the foolish ones for whom the “house” to be looked after is the body, neglect the ‘sound construction and maintenance’ of the soul, building on a weak foundation of wealth and earthly success.
The Day of Judgement will expose the foundation and destiny of every spiritual builder. “When the tempest passes, the wicked are no more, but the righteous are established forever” (Prov 10:25). “The just store up for themselves through good works the treasure of a good foundation for the future, so that they may take hold of the life that really is life” (1 Tim 6:17-19). Being Christians we need to build the house of our life on the Sure foundation Jesus himself. Let us pray for the conviction that the house that truly needs our attention is our soul, and the grace to dedicate ourselves wholeheartedly to its welfare.
Response: Blest is he who comes in the name of the Lord.
