GOD INVITES US TO HOPE IN HIM

Often, hope is the only thing that helps us get through the trials of life. Today’s readings exude a message of hope. The Israelites considered themselves privileged for being chosen as the people of God. But that sense of privilege was shattered when they were taken to exile, where they felt forsaken by God; they were overcome with grief, self-doubt and helplessness. In this difficult moment of their history, God, through the prophet Isaiah, assures his people that they have not been rejected by him, and invites them not to lose courage, for he will do greater things for them; he will bless them with prosperity, true peace and lasting happiness. God tells his people that he will end their spiritual barrenness and will make them fruitful once again.

For the Israelites, being without a child was a curse, a sign of God’s displeasure. Therefore, barrenness caused unbearable suffering and resulting social stigma. The Israelites in exile felt like a barren woman, cursed. God promises to make them whole again. The people are reminded of the universal kingship of God; that God is the ruler of all nations, and the world’s destiny is in his hands. Therefore, he is with them even when they undergo suffering and pain. We too receive the same invitation to hold on to hope in times of trial. In these unpredictable times, especially in the light of the pandemic and its resulting consequences to our physical, mental, social and spiritual lives, we can often feel overwhelmed and lose heart. But God reassures and reminds us of his endearing presence, which is a healing remedy to every pain we experience.

In the gospel, we see that many people believed in the message of hope of John the Baptist, and received the baptism of repentance, as they eagerly awaited the coming of Messiah. Imitating them let us also prepare eagerly for the coming of our Saviour, who desires to bring us true and lasting happiness.

Response: I will extol you, Lord, for you have raised me up.
