WE ARE CITIZENS OF HEAVEN

The Church prays today for the souls of all the baptized who have died and do not yet enjoy life with God in heaven. We believe that they are in a state of purgation, not hell but not yet heaven, and hence are at the mercy of God. Therefore, we believe that by fervent prayers and God’s mercy, they will be pardoned and join the saints in eternity.

Our readings today give us assurance that we belong to God, and are citizens of heaven. Today’s first reading beautifully tells us that the souls of the just are in the hand of God and they are in peace. Those who live a righteous life can have immortality and abide with God in love forever. We are called to live a righteous life by trusting and obeying God. If we remain in friendship with God, we can abide with him forever in heaven. In today’s Gospel passage, we hear from the lips of Jesus himself the promise of eternal life for those who come to him. This is the purpose of Jesus coming. God became man to offer salvation to humanity. Paul in today’s second reading speaks of the hope we have in the resurrection and shows how this hope is founded in Jesus Christ. Salvation comes through Jesus Christ alone. God proves his love for us, in that while we were still sinners Christ died for us. Now, he offers us forgiveness of sins so we can have friendship with him and spend all eternity with him.

Death is not the end, but truly a beginning. God desires for all of us to be in union with Him for all of eternity. Being aware of the reality of heaven to which God is inviting us, we are called to answer his call for true union with Him. God offers us salvation, but we need also to live in accordance with his will. Let us live with eternity in mind, so that we may be among the faithful who will spend eternity with God in heaven. In Christ, we have the profound hope of heaven. Let us all seek after heaven and hold great hope that it may be attained.

Response: The Lord is my shepherd; there is nothing I shall want.
