GRATITUDE LEADS US TO INTIMACY WITH GOD

The Gospel passage of today speaks of the encounter between Jesus and the ten lepers. This story is just like the story of many of us who meet the Lord and ask him, “Lord, have mercy on us.” Just like he responded to the lepers, he responds to us in love, with mercy, compassion and healing. Jesus sends the lepers to go see the priests. They were the ones authorized to confirm if a leper was healed; and only if he was truly healed, would he then be allowed to reconnect with society and the people.

Jesus heals on three levels; he heals our weak body, he heals our broken or languishing spirit, and he heals our relationships so that we are reunited with each other in the Church. As we see in the story of the lepers, the leper who recognized these different levels of healing, realizes that Jesus had given him new life and a new purpose. What is this new purpose? His new purpose was to let his life be a light to others. He begins with coming back to the source of healing and purpose. The story doesn’t tell us what the leper did after that, but from his initial response, we can be confident that he lived his life glorifying God and spreading the light of Christ to others. When we understand and experience these three levels of healing from Jesus, we will also find the same joy and gratitude as the leper. May we seek to encounter Jesus in this way always.

Jesus also says “Your faith has made you well.” We receive the gift of faith when we encounter Jesus. It is one of the three theological virtues because it is a virtue that only grows by a deep personal encounter with God. What happened to the other nine? There is no reason to believe that the nine lepers were rude and ungrateful. They were truly grateful for all they have received including the healing, but they did not equate the blessings of their lives with the grace of God who is our provider. Let us thus nurture the gift of faith we have, by seeking a closer walk with Jesus.

Response: Arise, O God; judge the earth!
