FRIENDSHIP WITH THE LIVING GOD

In today’s Gospel, we see the Sadducees approaching Jesus, to try and trap Him. These men constructed a puzzle that they felt Jesus could not solve. They aimed to embarrass him in front of the people who had gathered in the Temple. They begin to tell Jesus a story based on the Old Testament law of levirate marriage.

There were seven brothers, who one after the other, married the same woman and died before having offspring. Eventually, the woman died as well. Their question was, who would she belong to in the resurrection of the dead? The Jews, who believed in the resurrection, believed that life in eternity would be a continuation of life here on earth; i.e., a man would have the same family in heaven that he had on earth.

Surprisingly, the Sadducees themselves did not believe in the resurrection and were probably trying to mock Jesus’ belief in the resurrection. They thought they had created a problematic question based on the Law, revealing the absolute absurdity of the resurrection. They thought they had Jesus trapped, and believed to have finally claimed victory over him.

Whatever their intention, Jesus does not fall into their trap. He realizes that they are testing him. Jesus unravels a secret which is hidden from us saying that all will be like angels in heaven. There will be no more marriages. With this revelation Jesus assures us that human life continues even after death but with a different form and a different activity.

Jesus shows that God is a living God of a living people. Scriptures give proof that God was the friend of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob when they lived on the earth. That friendship with God could not cease with death. What we need to do now is live continuously in the presence of the living God and begin experiencing the life of resurrection right now here on earth.

Response: To you, O Lord, I lift up my soul.
