FREEDOM THROUGH THE SPIRIT

In the first reading, Saint Paul says that a veil prevents the Jews from seeing the radiance of the Gospel. This ‘veil’ is their refusal to believe without first understanding; their desire to know before trusting. Every Christian is called to reflect the radiance of God’s Spirit. If we cast aside our desire for certainty, and allow ourselves to be transformed by the Spirit, our lives become a reflection of the glory of the face of Christ. We need to allow the Holy Spirit to be the guide and inspiration of all we think, say and do.

According to Paul, an apostle should not lose heart, but be truthful to the message of God, so that all may see the glory of God in him; so that the life of Jesus may be revealed in him. For Paul, the ‘glory of Christ’ is revealed in the reality of the cross. Jesus, in his passion and death, and his victory over sin at his resurrection, made it possible for us to live a new life in him. As we look upon the glory of Christ, we will be empowered to live as Jesus taught at the Sermon on the Mount.

In the Gospel, Jesus proposes a new world in which fraternal love and universal brotherhood take precedence over everything else. There can be occasions of disagreement, discord and dispute in our lives but it is important to reconcile, forgive and live in peace and harmony. It is futile to make an offering to God when we nurse grudges and anger against our brothers and sisters, the children of God.

The law of Christ is a call to purify our hearts, intentions and desires. It is not enough to be faithful to the law; one has to seek to understand it in spirit and live it accordingly. The Holy Spirit can transform us. For, as Paul says, “where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom.”

Response: The glory of the Lord will dwell in our land
