AN ATTITUDE OF GRATITUDE

The attitude of thanking one other in our day-to-day life, for the help received, is very essential. It not only brings joy to the person from whom help is received but also builds up the relationship between the helper and the helped. We cherish the goodness shown to us and make it known to others. It is much more precious when we thank our creator, God. It is good to thank him for everything. Yes! For everything. As one grows in this virtue, he/she thanks God even when bad times befall, for his loving presence is felt most during those times. After the storm, the heart leaps with joy in thanksgiving for the grace received to endure the trial.

The virtue of gratitude grows only when one is in communion with God. Since God has created humanity to share in his blessed life, he invites us to seek him, to know him, to love him with all our strength. When one responds to God, something wonderful happens. As one builds up this relationship with God, his relationship with his neighbour begins to bloom in charity. This is what we see happening in the life of Tobit.

The angel Raphael makes known to him and his son that they should bless and extol God’s name, make known his deeds before all men and never tire of giving him thanks. Something similar happens to the poor widow in the Gospel. She lived in poverty of spirit and gave devoutly to the Lord’s treasury the two coins of charity – the love of God and neighbour. Her generous spirit made her heart thankful to God in all circumstances of life.

The son of God himself gave thanks to his Father in heaven at the last supper, when he gave his body and blood to be our food. He knew what lay ahead of him – the intense suffering and the terrible death, and yet he taught us at that moment to thank God and love our neighbour. May we all have an attitude of gratitude towards god and our neighbour.

Response: Blessed is God who lives for ever
