TAKE THE DEAL, THE LORD OFFERS

A reward is a benefit received by one, for the good done. Scripture describes God as the supreme rewarder. “For the Lord is a good rewarder. He will reward you seven times over.” (Sir 35:13). And in the Gospel Jesus is even more appealing by saying, “There is no one who has left house, brothers, sisters, father, children or land for my sake and for the sake of the Gospel who will not be repaid a hundred times over...”

Has any marketing enterprise made you an offer to repay you seven times over, leave alone a hundred times? And yet the question is, why does such a generous Gospel deal fall on deaf ears? Do we take Jesus’ words lightly or do we find them too good to be true? Is it easier to be fooled by a sales agent’s offers – “buy one, get two free” – than to believe in Jesus’ powerful words? Could it be that we see this unreasonable appeal of Jesus in our own limited way?

For, who could handle a hundred fathers, mothers, sisters, houses, cars, lands, etc.? And then, if everyone would be rewarded in the same way, what would be the fun in having so much? There would be no chances of the ego being inflated, or one feeling more important than the other. So, after all, why even get into the mess of such an invitation? Better to keep turning around in our own circles of pain and pleasure.

Being stuck with our own little reasoning and our inflated ego, we do not mind coming to terms with losing an invaluable treasure, i.e., a “contented heart”, a heart enveloped with an unsurpassable peace that no reward on earth can give. It is only our divine Saviour who can be one to give this treasure. Do we know what we are missing in life? No, not until we taste it. And to do so, we have to give up the little we have, to endure all the little persecutions that come our way, for the sake of the glory of God and his kingdom.

Response: To one whose way is blameless; I will show the salvation of God.
