THE KINGDOM OF GOD IN US

Jesus inaugurated the Kingdom of God by His presence, words and actions. He desires that this kingdom grows and spreads according to His plan. He gathered a group of men around him who would learn and live His Kingdom and preach that Kingdom to the entire humanity. He taught them by His own life. This kingdom of love was also taught to the followers by way of sermons. In His efforts to teach His Kingdom He also used parables.

Today, Jesus gives us a discourse on the Kingdom of God. What is it like? Through the parables of the mustard seed and the yeast, Jesus describes the Kingdom of God as tiny and small like the yeast or the mustard seed. It seems insignificant, its operation invisible, hidden. Yet, it is not lifeless, on the contrary is very dynamic and active. It grows into a mighty tree, a life giving Bread. The Yeast too, so small in size and yet has such a powerful effect upon the dough. The yeast works slowly and somewhat miraculously. Little by little the dough rises and is transformed. This is the ideal way for the Gospel to work in our lives.

What is a mustard seed or a little bit of yeast? Both are so common, so tiny, and so insignificant to the worldly mind that thinks of publicity, advertisement, grandeur, might and power. Does someone think of the mustard seed and its contribution to the taste of the food when one eats some delicious food or pays attention to the yeast used with the flour in some bread? The Kingdom of God inaugurated by Jesus is similar to the seed or the yeast. A tiny seed becomes a big tree, but not overnight. Eventually it not only produces fruit, but also gives domicile to the birds. The Kingdom of God preached by Jesus is still hidden from the public glare. It has to grow and become a tree giving shade and rest to others. When the Word of God is preached, it is sown in the hearts of human beings. The seed, the yeast is also “Salvation in Jesus Christ”, it is the encounter with Jesus, each human being desires for and hopes for. It is hidden in the life of a listener. But then it has to grow and multiply. Its effects are slowly seen in the world and thus the Kingdom of God grows and spreads.

Prayer: Lord Jesus, bring to completion Your Kingdom within me, which was inaugurated by you on the day of my Baptism. Amen.
