READING THE SIGNS OF THE TIME
Sometimes animals are much better than human beings in sensing what’s going to happen. It is astonishing when we study the sensitivity of dog - it can easily read your feelings better than we read one another’s. The discoveries of modern science have enabled us to read better the signs in our environment and to predict certain events with relative accuracy. Unfortunately, however, no scientific discovery has been made to increase our capacity to read and interpret the signs provided by God in relation to our life.
In today’s Gospel Jesus reminds us that as we go on with our life, we are inevitably brought nearer to the end of our life. We need, therefore, to be more attentive to the signs that God gives, to avail of the opportunities for conversion that he provides, in preparation for that all important final meeting with our Divine Judge.
God delights to reveal his mind and heart to us through nature, and people. That’s why Jesus is rebuking his disciples and us for not paying attention to the signs of the times. He is actually encouraging us to look around and see for ourselves how his spirit is at work on the earth. If we look, we will see that the world is in its hungriest state ever. World is hungry for friendship, love, peace, truth and at last God himself. Often people try to fill the emptiness in their lives with counterfeit replacements for honest love: money, success, sexual encounters, goods, drugs, and alcohol. As a result, we miss the real love that really satisfies all our longing.
St Paul wrote in his letter to the Romans, that the whole of creation waits in eager expectation for the son of God to be revealed (8:19). This is the plan of God; this is what we were created for. Realizing this truth is reading the signs of the time.
Prayer: O Lord, may I be attentive to the signs of your presence in my life. Amen.
