CALLED TO BE QUALIFIED!

“God does not CALL the QUALIFIED, God QUALIFIES the CALLED.” This saying always sets me thinking how God’s ways are quite contrary to that of the world. For all good jobs, for admissions into good schools, for all leaders, etc., we always without exception, look and desire for the most qualified, the most renowned and skilled people.

When Jesus embarked on his mission he chose twelve men to be his friends and apostles. In the choice of the twelve, we see a characteristic feature of God’s work: Jesus chose very ordinary men. They were non-professionals, who had no wealth or position. They were chosen from the common people who did ordinary things, had no special education, and no social advantages. Jesus wanted ordinary men who could take an assignment and do it extraordinarily well. He chose these men, not for what they were, but for what they would be capable of becoming under his direction and power.

The two apostles whom the church commemorates today stand out in this regard. There is hardly anything mentioned in the Bible about them except their name and their calling to work for the kingdom. He called the unqualified probably because he did not want them to have a claim of their own in the kingdom. He probably wanted to drive home the message that the kingdom of God is a gratuitous gift which none can merit.

Jesus chose the most ordinary people of his time to be his apostles. He empowered them and they became his faithful ambassadors to the nations. Jesus qualifies us also, he makes delicate clay pots like us, to become “dwelling places of God in the Spirits” (Eph 2: 22). He makes us heralds of the good news to the ends of the world. He gives us power to manifest God’s Kingdom on earth bringing His healing and deliverance to people in sickness and sin. Are you up for that call?

Lord Jesus, Here I am to do your Will. Amen
