FAITH BRINGS ABOUT A TRANSFORMATION OF LIFE

Perusing through the pages of the gospel, we can conclude without doubt that faith is the prerequisite condition in all of Jesus’ miracles and healing. Jesus demanded a faith response from all those who turned to him for help. Today’s Gospel presents the healing of a blind man. This miracle stands in contrast with all the other healing miracles of Jesus’ wherein he healed the person instantly. At first, Jesus applied mud mixed with his spittle and asked the blind man whether he could see; the man answered saying, “I can see people looking like trees and walking.” Then Jesus laid his hand on him again following which the blind man could see clearly. Along with the process of healing, the blind man also underwent a process of transformation in his life of faith. Just as at first, his healing was not complete, so too was his faith not strong; gradually though, as his faith progressed, his healing became complete. In healing him partially, Jesus invited him to deeper faith.

Furthermore, Jesus performs this miracle of healing the blind man after he has already reprimanded his disciples on their lack of faith or belief. As the blind man is being healed in stages, so also are the disciples being led from their lack of belief to trust in him. This miracle serves as a turning point for them. This growth in their faith is seen in the following chapters of the Gospel.

This parable of healing the blind man testifies to the loving mercy of God towards his children, who patiently waits for us to take a step towards him. Once we show our sincerity and openness to accept his healing touch, he will use whatever little we can offer, to bring about a transformation in our lives. The blind man’s experience shows that our healing process may not be sudden but gradual and slow, and only firm faith in Jesus can keep us on this path towards transformation and fulfilment.

Response: Who shall dwell on your holy mountain, O Lord?
