SEEKING SATISFACTION IN LIFE

When we look at our text today, we see Jesus talking to the people about living in a world of uncertainty, a life characterized by restlessness lacking peace and surety. “We played the flute, and you didn’t dance, we played a funeral march, and you didn’t weep and cry.”

John the Baptist lived in the wilderness, he dressed funny, he ate some strange foods, and he preached a hard message of repentance. He called the religious leaders of the day “a brood of Vipers, snakes". He accused them of being trees who did not bear good fruit, and those that will be cut down and thrown into the fire. He preached the urgency of repentance: “His winnowing fork is in His hand, and He will thoroughly clear His threshing floor; and He will gather His wheat into the barn, but He will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire.” For this reason, some people did not like John the Baptist or his message.

Then came along Jesus, who freely moved with sinners, tax collectors, prostitutes, and many other undesirables. But he preached a message of love and forgiveness. He healed the sick, gave sight to the blind, made the lame walk. He loved everyone. However, some people did not like Jesus or his message. It is sad to say, things are no different today. We act like spoiled little children who are never happy. We are never happy with anything it seems.

In the Gospel, the leaders and us are compared to those children in the marketplace, who heard the flute but didn’t dance, and as they heard the funeral song did not mourn. They spent time only in criticizing all that they saw and heard. John, they called a person possessed and Jesus they called a glutton and a drunkard. Let us make a decision to be open to God and his message of salvation and find the life we cannot stop looking for in Jesus.

Response: He who follows you, Lord, will have the light of life.
