GOD IS ON A RESCUE MISSION

John was convicted of the crime of grand larceny when he innocently picked a deck of playing cards from a shop. Turns out, his deck was accidentally switched with that of a rich man who had a winning lottery ticket in the bunch John took. The police caught this young man and he was sentenced to life imprisonment. There was no one willing to vouch for John or save him from the fate that awaited. Just one man, his childhood companion Adam, decided to help him break free from the chains of his doom and escape to a place of hope.

While Adam assured John in a letter that he would find a way to get him out, John never could estimate the exact day or time that Adam would arrive. All he knew was that Adam would be dressed in a white uniform to blend in with the prison doctors. Adam was probably planning intensely, working behind the scenes to make a way. All John could do is trust and hope. While Adam would do everything in his capacity to rescue John, the final decision to co-operate would be John’s. He would need to be present, waiting and ready!

The Lord talks about the kingdom of God today in a similar light. Jesus assures the disciples and us, that he will come to save us. And when he does, we will know because of the glory that will descend upon us to light up our miserable, dark world. His grace will break the shackles of sin and injustice, so that we can fully rejoice in his everlasting life and freedom! But, “he who created us without our help will not save us without our consent.” (St Augustine). We will need to be present, waiting and ready when he comes.

We need to never lose hope. “Hope, O my soul, hope. You know neither the day nor the hour. Watch carefully, for everything passes quickly, even though your impatience makes doubtful what is certain, and turns a very short time into a long one.” – St Teresa of Avila

Response: Forever is your word, O Lord.
