HUMANITY: IMAGE AND LIKENESS OF THE TRINITY
As we celebrate the Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity, let us reflect on how our faith in a Trinitarian God can transform our daily life. God has created us in his image and likeness. If the image and likeness of God is Trinitarian, the image and likeness of every human being is also Trinitarian. Hence, when we celebrate God’s nature, we are celebrating our own nature. We become fully human only when we model our life after the nature of the Triune God.
In a way, this feast is a grand finale of all the preceding feasts. The solemnities of the Resurrection, the Ascension and the Pentecost, lead us to the celebration of the mystery of the Holy Trinity. We are called to participate in the life of the Holy Trinity, i.e., our vocation is to imitate the Trinitarian character of God in our daily life. We are shaped by the God of our faith. In a very special way, this feast invites us to transform our relationships according to the Trinitarian model.
A relationship founded on genuine love: The Holy Trinity is the absolute symbol of true relationship. It is a community of absolute sharing. The three divine persons abide in each other. The Father and the Spirit abide in the Son. The Son and the Spirit abide in the Father. The Father and the Son abide in the Spirit. This is called mutual indwelling. This indwelling is founded on love. Mutual indwelling symbolizes oneness. Only in perfect love, mutual indwelling is possible.
God is the source of all human relationships. We are called to be in communion with God and with one another. The mystery of the Trinity invites us to become people of genuine relationships. The spiritual life does not imply a distancing from people. Rather, it is a constant striving towards greater involvement and commitment.
Every relationship is founded on the virtue of love. The Father is love, the Son is love and the Spirit is love. On the other hand, the role of the devil is to divide and separate. He brings quarrels, misunderstanding and divisions. This feast reminds us of our universal brotherhood. We are called to work for social justice and equality.
A relationship of self-giving: In the Holy Trinity, the Father gives totally to the Son; the Son receives the Father and fully represents him. We see how the Father is at the service of the Son and the Son is at the service of the Father. The Spirit is at the service of the Father and the Son. The Son and the Spirit work as the two hands of the Father. The Spirit moves between the Father and the Son as the heavenly breath. In a culture of maximum exploitation and selfishness, we are asked to learn the culture of self-giving and self-emptying. The culture of the world tempts us to accumulate the maximum for ourselves. We try to hide more than we reveal. We try to possess more that we are willing to share.
A relationship that liberates: The feast of the Holy Trinity is a challenge to any form of dictatorship and individualism. The Trinitarian concept of God leaves no space for the attitude of authoritarianism or superiority. There is absolute freedom in the Trinitarian community. The Son used his freedom to do the will of the Father. In all freedom, he said: “Not my will but yours be done.” In all freedom, he cried out: “Into your hands, I commend my spirit.”
Let us take time to ponder on these questions: How do I imitate the Holy Trinity in my social and family life? What is the quality of my relationships? Are they affected by the virus of individualism and selfishness? Do I seek personal pleasures even at the cost of others? What is the quality of my openness to God and to the world?
Response: Blessed the people the Lord has chosen as his heritage
