BARTIMAEUS, A DISCIPLE WITH DEEP INSIGHT

Today’s text is the miracle of the healing of a blind beggar named Bartimaeus or “son of Timaeus”. In Mark’s Gospel, this was the final miracle in the ministry of Jesus. On hearing Bartimaeus crying out and asking for mercy, the crowd tried to silence him. But he displayed great faith and perseverance. The title “Son of David” that he used to address Jesus is messianic. David was the greatest king of Israel and he ruled from 1010- 97 BC. He kept a close relationship with God. The term “Son of David’’ means ‘the descendant of David’. God promised David that one of his descendants would always rule (2 Sam 7:12- 13). Matthew and Luke show us the link when they trace Jesus’ family tree back to David, in their respective genealogies. Jesus teaches us today to be willing to render service at all times, to all those in need. Let us pause to reflect on our Christian attitude towards those in need.

When the crowd attempted to silence Bartimaeus, he cried even more loudly, “Have mercy on me!” Very often in our own lives, it may appear that a cause we are concerned about looks hopeless. But Bartimaeus shows us how to persevere in our faith and put our trust in Jesus who will save us. Ironically, Bartimaeus, though blind, was able to see more clearly. Am I able to see the Spirit at work in my life?

Jesus, after enquiring and hearing what Bartimaeus wished to be done for him, healed him. Bartimaeus is able to “see again”. He is healed because of his faith. After he was healed, Bartimaeus “followed Jesus on the road”. Mark tries to convey a hidden meaning. The disciples had been following Jesus (1:17; 1:18; 1:20; 2:14) but were unable to see. There was a kind of spiritual blindness that prevented them from seeing the plan of God. Mark shows Bartimaeus as a disciple with deep insight, who followed Jesus to Jerusalem and to the cross. What about me?

Response: By the word of the Lord the heavens were made
