WEDNESDAY, SECOND WEEK OF EASTER
Reading 1: Acts 5: 17-26 On trial before the high priest and the Sanhedrin, the apostles continue boldly to express their intention to preach the good news.
Gospel: Jn 3: 16-21 Jesus continues his theology lesson for Nicodemus: “the One whom God has sent speaks the words of God.” And Jesus is the one sent.

THE LOVING MERCY OF GOD
Some years ago a vessel sailing, was observed to make signals of distress. When hailed by another vessel, they reported themselves as “Dying for water!” “Dip it up then,” was the response, “you are in the mouth of the Amazon river.” There was fresh water all around them, and yet they were dying of thirst because they thought themselves to be surrounded by the salt sea. How often are we ignorant of the loving mercy of the Lord!
The Gospel today speaks of this wonderful knowledge, this immeasurable mercy. “God sent his son into the world so that the world might be saved through him”. This statement proclaims the limitless love of God and the loving devotion of Father and Son. God showed his love for mankind in particular by making us in his image and entrusting us to be caretakers of the world. Emphasizing how important it was for humanity to live in love, Jesus himself summarized the whole of Scripture into two commands about love: Love God with all your heart, soul, and mind; and love your neighbour as yourself. God’s love for us is manifested in the sending of his only son to be sacrificed in atonement for our sins, so that, through our belief in Jesus, we may have eternal life.
God’s love for us is everlasting and sacrificial. Since the Creation in the garden of Eden, he has loved us. Since the Fall in that same garden, we have rebelled against him. This propensity to sin separated the human race from God and showed humanity its need for a saviour - someone to save us from condemnation and to show us the way to salvation through faith.
We can never do anything to deserve God’s immeasurable sacrifice for us. However, we are to turn from sin and live our lives in a way that reflects our faith in his son Jesus Christ. This way, in humility, we accept God’s grace and follow Jesus’ instructions in the gospel to attain salvation.
Res. Psalm: Ps 34: 2-9 The lowly one called, and the Lord heard him.
