DO YOU WANT TO GO AWAY TOO?

 “SPRINGS OF LIVING WATER”

Daily Spiritual Reflections

SATURDAY, THIRD WEEK OF EASTER

Reading 1: Acts 9: 31-32 Peter prays over a dead woman and she is restored to life. Because of this miracle many come to believe in Jesus.

Gospel: Jn 6: 60-69 Ending his discourse on the Eucharist, Jesus, still demanding faith, hints at a way his words may be understood.

DO YOU WANT TO GO AWAY TOO?

“What about you, do you want to go away too?” What was Jesus thinking! So many of his disciples had already stopped going with him. Some could follow him no longer on the narrow path; others had just lost interest. Did he want to risk losing the Twelve as well? These Twelve, whom he had handpicked to be with him, to be trained under his wing, to be taught his gospel, so that they may be sent out as his witnesses and messengers? These Twelve, whom he had loved like his own, whom he had nurtured in the faith, whom he had the given power to heal the sick and cast out demons?

Jesus’ question pushed them to choose him as he had chosen them, or not. And here we see Peter’s confession of faith, which throws light on the attitude of a true disciple; that is, although we don’t always understand him, he understands us; although, we are hesitant to accept him and his teaching, he accepts us, loves us, forgives us, and desires to grant us eternal life.

The teaching of the Bread of Life and the need to eat his flesh and drink his blood, was unacceptable to many of his disciples, and they went away and accompanied him no more. Jesus will not change his gospel for us, just because we find Christianity difficult or impractical; instead, he asks us quite plainly, “What about you, do you want to go away too?”

“What is my response to the Lord’s question? Does his teaching bring me fear and hardship, or joy, excitement and zeal? Am I able to profess my faith like Peter did - “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the message of eternal life.”? If we truly believe in Jesus, we must profess our faith and commit ourselves to him. If not, then we need to surrender our worries, fears and uncertainties to him so that we may be strengthened to fight against our weaknesses and to walk with determination in his footsteps and according to his gospel.

Res. Psalm: Ps 116: 12-17 How can I repay the Lord for all his goodness to me?
