OPENING OURSELVES TO ENCOUNTER JESUS

Jesus returns to his own hometown and teaches there; but what does he find? Resistance and mistrust; the people are at the most amazed, as they would at a circus or a talent show. Mark could say here what John says early in the first chapter of his gospel: “To his own he came, yet his own did not accept him. Any who did accept him he empowered to become children of God...” And Jesus could say here what he says in Matthew 12:39: “This is an evil and unfaithful generation that asks for a sign! The only sign it will be given is the sign of the prophet Jonah.” The people changed their lives, listening to the words of Jonah. Here, Jesus is talking to those closest to him, and as Christians we qualify to be among them. Yet, do we listen and embrace the words of the “one greater than Jonah”, and change ourselves accordingly?

We do call on the name of Jesus, as our Lord and Saviour. But, do we truly see him as the living God? Or is Jesus just a good man to us, a wise person, one among the many inspiring personalities of history? If we are able to grasp with our minds and to accept in our hearts that the supreme Godhead is concerned about us personally, our lives would be very different. This fact, however, that the almighty God is lovingly beside us, in every way and at every moment, just seems at times too incredible to be true. If we could only open ourselves to his warm and serene presence so that his word could penetrate and transform us! This is possible, but only if we pray for it frequently and seriously; only if we ask him to transform us, with patience and hope, with great longing and unwavering faith. Then, and only then, can Jesus work great wonders in, with, and through us.

Response: The mercy of the Lord is everlasting upon those who hold him in fear.
