CHRISTIAN FELLOWSHIP
St Paul’s letter to Philippians, unlike his other letters is a joyful letter. In today’s precluding lines Paul appears to be really celebrating his Christian fellowship with the Philippians. Apparently at the fellowship table which the lawyers and Pharisees share with Jesus, there prevails a tensed mood and a cold, formal setup. The minds are filled with doubts and questions and there is even silence, in place of laughter and cheer. All because it is the Sabbath Day and they are up with Jesus not to break the law. Did they really miss to celebrate their fellowship with Jesus at the table as did the sinners like Matthew and Zacheus?
At times it is good to take stock of the fellowship that we share with others at various levels.
1. At the personal level: We will be truly celebrating our Christian fellowship with our friends and dear ones when, like St Paul we encourage them in Christ, thank God for them and try to bring them closer to Him. In fact St Teresa of Avila, while speaking on mature friendship or true spiritual love in her Way of Perfection teaches us that the persons who posses true, spiritual love are intent on bringing the souls of their loved friends closer to God than merely remain at a human and infantile level. In other words our friendships should have at least some spiritual linkage.
2. At the social level: With the fast changing social, cultural and technological trends do some of our events like weddings and other celebrations at times turn out to be more fashionable, devoid of true fellowship of the hearts?
3. At the ecclesial level: Eucharist is in many senses a divine human celebration. Both the ministers and the participants of this Sacramental table need to make it a true spiritual celebration, and not reduce it into a mere cultic, routine and time bound act to be finished quickly.
Prayer: Let our love for You and for one another be sincere and selfless, O Lord. Amen..
